How should I evaluate members with a neutral or negative reference?

Follow

A negative reference can help you to make an informed decision about whether you want to meet someone. It’s important that you make a decision about someone based on your own thresholds of personal safety.

Context is very important to evaluating any information on someone’s profile. If the Surfer and the Host both left references for each other, do they share the same opinion about the experience? Do they describe the same events? Could the disagreement have been a clash of culture or personality, or does it show a safety risk? Do you think that the behavior described would bother you if you met this person?
