I heard of someone charging for a couch. Is that OK?

No, hospitality on Couchsurfing must be free. A Host should never ask a guest to pay for their lodging, and a guest should not offer. We do recommend that a guest show their appreciation by cooking a meal, taking the host out, bringing a small gift or some other gesture.

Hosts should only offer what they are able to offer for free and clearly say what those things are in the My Home section of their profile. If there are some things that can't be offered unless the Couchsurfers agree to share the cost (e.g.: gas for trips they take together or sharing costs for meals they cook), this should be discussed between the host and surfer, but should never be a requirement for surfing with that Host.

Couchsurfers may use the website to look for flatmates in the appropriate groups (i.e: Roommates wanted) as it is a great way to find others who are willing to join a home that hosts, and many cities have groups that are tailored to apartment hunters. Postings from brokers or real estate agents are not allowed.

If you have found someone that is charging for accommodation, please report them to our safety team.
