So you want to lead the crew. Let's go.
What Is a Curated Event?
A Curated Event is something already happening in your city (a concert, a sports game, a local festival, a street fair, a farmer's market) that a Couchsurfer decides to turn into a group experience. Not organizing the thing itself, just rounding up the right people to enjoy it together.
Think of it as: the event exists. You're just making sure the best version of attending it happens.
What Is a Curated Event Organizer?
A Curated Event Organizer is a member who wants to go somewhere, doesn't want to go alone, and has the energy to get a crew together. You're the point person. The one people look to when they ask "where are we meeting?" or "what time?" or "is this still happening?"
No special skills required. Just enthusiasm, a bit of follow-through, and good vibes.
What Can I Actually Do as an Organizer?
As the Organizer, you have a few tools to keep things running smoothly:
- Update the event photo: make it visually represent the event. Your own photos are best.
- Update the event info: times, meeting spots, changes, anything members need to know. Keep it current.
- Moderate the discussion: keep the conversation helpful and on-topic. Answer questions, welcome newcomers, remove anything that doesn't belong.
Same energy as a community moderator, just for your event's space.
Any Tips for Being a Great Organizer?
Glad you asked.
Be the first one there. Nothing sets the tone like showing up on time (or early). If people arrive and you're not there, the energy drops before it even starts. Be present.
Set a meeting point. Pick somewhere obvious and easy to find. A landmark, a specific entrance, a bar nearby. Tell people exactly where to look for you and when.
Consider a pre-event hangout. A drink at a nearby bar, a quick park hang, a coffee before the doors open. Getting the group together before the main event is one of the best things you can do. People feel less like strangers by the time you all walk in together.
Introduce yourself to everyone. When someone new joins or shows up, say hi. Use their name. Make them feel like they were expected and wanted. Because they were.
Answer questions in the event discussion. If someone asks something in the comments, answer it. Even a quick reply goes a long way. Silence makes people nervous about whether the event is still happening or if anyone will actually be there.
Have a backup meetup spot. Crowds happen. Phones die. People get turned around. Pick a "if you're lost, go here" spot and mention it in the event details. Saves a lot of stress.
Update as things change. New meeting time? Different entrance? Event moved? Post it. Members are trusting you to keep them in the loop, don't let them show up confused.
Bring good energy. Seriously. You set the tone for the whole group. If you're warm, relaxed, and happy to be there, everyone else will be too.
What if I'm Not Sure How Many People Will Actually Show Up?
Totally normal. Post the event, share it in your local community, and let it grow organically. Even if only a handful of members come, a small group of Couchsurfers at a great event is still a great time. Quality over quantity.
Do I Need to Buy Tickets or Coordinate Entry for Everyone?
Nope. Curated Events are community gatherings around an existing event, not group bookings. Members handle their own tickets, entry, and logistics. Your job is to be the social glue, not the travel agent.
Anything Else?
Have fun. Genuinely. You're not running a conference. You're just getting a group of curious, adventurous people together to enjoy something great in your city. That's it. That's the whole job.
The best Organizers are the ones who clearly just... wanted to be there. Be that person.
All events on Couchsurfing have a public view and are accessible to non-logged-in users. Keep this in mind when posting meetup details.
Organizing a curated event is a great way to build your Couchsurfing network. Members you meet at events may send friend requests, leave references, or connect with you on future trips.
