Verification on Couchsurfing got a meaningful upgrade. Here's what's new, what stayed the same, and what it means for you.
What Changed?
Verification now centers on confirming your identity with a government-issued ID. Couchsurfing has offered ID verification before, but it's now the standard way to earn a Verification Badge.
The process is simple: snap a photo of your ID, record a short video selfie, and an automated system checks that the two match up. If everything looks good, your Verification Badge appears on your profile across all platforms.
Why Require ID Verification?
One goal: a safer, higher-trust community for everyone. A government-issued ID is a much stronger signal of authenticity than older verification methods, and it goes a long way toward protecting members from fraud and impersonation. The more members who verify, the better the whole community gets.
What About My Previous Verification?
Good news if you already verified with a government-issued ID: you're all set. Your verification is recognized and carries over. You won't need to go through the process again.
Does Anything Else Work Differently?
Phone number verification is no longer part of the process. Identity verification now runs entirely through your government-issued ID, with no SMS confirmation needed. Simpler, cleaner, stronger.
Verification is still optional. You can use Couchsurfing fully without it. That said, a Verification Badge on your profile helps hosts and travelers feel confident connecting with you, which can make a real difference when you're reaching out to stay somewhere or welcoming guests.
