Finding Hosts and Travelers
How do I search for hosts on Couchsurfing?
Use the Explore page to search for hosts in any destination. Couchsurfing personalizes your results so you see hosts who share interests, speak your language, or have mutual friends.
On mobile:
- Tap Explore
in the bottom navigation bar
- Select Hosts
- Type a location into the search bar
- Browse hosts near that location
On the web:
- Click Explore
in the left navigation bar
- Select Hosts
- Type a location into the search bar
- Browse hosts near that location
Each result shows the host's photo, name, References, friend count, and shared interests. Tap or click any result to view their full profile. You can also use filters to narrow results by shared languages, interests, gender, age range, type of lodging, and more.
How do I find other travelers on Couchsurfing?
Search for travelers the same way you search for hosts. Go to Explore, select Travelers, and enter a destination to see who else is visiting that location.
On mobile:
- Tap Explore
in the bottom navigation bar
- Select Travelers
- Type a location into the search bar
- Browse travelers near that location
On the web:
- Click Explore
in the left navigation bar
- Select Travelers
- Type a location into the search bar
- Browse travelers near that location
Results are personalized based on your profile, so travelers you're more likely to connect with appear higher in the list.
How do I send a stay request or message after finding someone?
Once you find a host or member you'd like to connect with, open their profile and send a Stay request or message. Personalize your request by mentioning shared interests or why you'd like to meet.
A complete profile with a real photo and genuine bio gets more responses. References from past stays and meetings also help build trust and make hosts more likely to accept your request.
Meeting People in Real Time
What is Hangouts and how do I use it to meet people?
Hangouts lets you see nearby Couchsurfing members who are available to meet up right now. It's perfect for when you've just arrived in a new city or simply want to do something spontaneous.
From the Explore page , tap Hangouts to browse nearby members. You can view their profiles, send a chat request, and make plans. Your exact location is never shown; only a nearby pin is displayed.
Hangouts is included with your Couchsurfing membership.
How do I find Couchsurfing Events near me?
Events are a great way to meet people in person. You can find events near you or in a city you're visiting.
Access Events from Events in your navigation bar. Browse upcoming activities and meetups, then mark yourself as Interested or Going to connect with others who are attending.
Events are included with your Couchsurfing membership.
Joining Communities and Exploring Destinations
How do I join Couchsurfing Communities?
Communities are spaces built around shared interests, hobbies, or locations. Joining one is a natural way to meet people who care about the same things you do.
On mobile:

in the bottom navigation bar
- Select Communities
- Type a topic or location into the search bar
- Browse Communities that match your interests
On the web:
- Click Explore
in the left navigation bar

- Browse Communities that match your interests
You don't need to join a Community to participate. You can browse and post in any Community without joining.
How do I explore a destination before reaching out to people?
Search for any location to visit its Location Page. There you'll see a snapshot of Couchsurfing activity in that place: who lives there, who's visiting, upcoming Events, and local Communities. It's a good way to get a feel for a destination before reaching out to anyone.

What is my Feed and how does it help me connect with people?
Your Feed surfaces people you might want to connect with, based on your profile and activity. You'll see friend suggestions, host and traveler recommendations, and updates from people you're already connected with, all in one scrollable view.
How do friend introductions work on Couchsurfing?
If a friend has an upcoming trip, Couchsurfing may suggest introducing them to other friends who live at or have visited their destination. These introductions happen through a group chat and are a low-effort way to help your network connect.
Building Trust and Getting Better Responses
How do I know if a Couchsurfing member is trustworthy?
References are how trust works on Couchsurfing. They're written by members who have stayed with, hosted, or met someone in person. Read a member's References to learn about their past experiences with other Couchsurfing members.
A complete profile with a real photo, genuine bio, and multiple References is a good sign. Verification badges also indicate that a member has taken extra steps to confirm their identity.
How do I improve my chances of getting responses on Couchsurfing?
A complete profile makes it much easier for others to say yes to your requests. The more you share about yourself, the better your search results will be too.
Here's how to improve your chances:
- Add a real photo and write a genuine bio
- Fill out your interests, languages, and travel experience
- Gather References from past stays and meetings
- Personalize every message or request you send
Couchsurfing personalizes results based on your interests, language, and connections, so a detailed profile helps you find better matches.
