The best stays on Couchsurfing don't happen by accident. They happen because someone took a few minutes to be a real human being about it. Here's how to be that person.
Start With Your Profile
Hosts are going to look you up before they respond. A complete, genuine profile is the difference between a yes and a silence. Make sure you have:
- A clear, recent photo
- A filled-out About Me section
- At least one answered prompt
- Your places visited and lived
Getting verified takes it a step further. It shows hosts you're serious about being part of this community.
One Thing to Know: You'll need at least 2 completed profile steps before you can send a stay request. If you're not there yet, your profile page will show you exactly what to fill in next.
Find the Right Host
This part matters more than people think. Take time to actually read profiles before you reach out. Look for hosts you'd genuinely enjoy meeting: shared interests, compatible vibes, hosting details that work for your trip.
Ask yourself: why do I want to stay with this specific person? If the honest answer is just "they're near my bus stop," keep looking. The best stays come from real connection, not logistics.
Write Something Personal
Your note to the host is your first impression, and a copy-paste message is easy to spot and easy to ignore. A great note:
- Uses their name
- References something specific from their profile: a shared interest, a travel story, something that genuinely caught your attention
- Gives them a quick sense of who you are and what brings you to their city
- Is clear about your dates, how long you'd like to stay, and roughly what you'll be up to
- Mentions anyone traveling with you, with links to their profiles if they're on Couchsurfing
You don't need to write an essay. You just need to show you actually read their profile.
Send Your Request at the Right Time
One to four weeks before you arrive is the sweet spot. Too far out and it's hard for hosts to commit. Too last-minute puts them in a tough spot.
It's also worth reaching out to a few different hosts, especially in popular cities or during busy travel seasons.
Once your request goes out, you'll see a "Request Sent" confirmation. Tap or click View to jump straight into your chat with the host. If you aren't already connected, a chat request is sent along with the stay request and the host will need to accept the chat before they can respond to your stay. You'll be able to track everything under Your Stays in your Library .
Keep the Conversation Going
Good communication doesn't stop once you hit send. If a host can't accommodate you, a quick thanks goes a long way. If your plans change after someone says yes, let them know immediately. Hosts are opening their home to you. Treat their time like it matters, because it does.
