Ever been in a new city and wished you could just find someone to grab coffee with? Or maybe you're looking for company to check out a local band tonight. That's exactly what Hangout is for.
Hangout lets you signal that you're available and open to meeting up right now. Once you're in the Hangout, you become visible to other nearby members who are also looking to connect, and they become visible to you. It's real-time, it's spontaneous, and it's one of the best ways to turn a quiet evening into an unexpected adventure.
How Do I Join the Hangout?
On mobile:
- Tap the Hangout button in the top right corner of the Explore
or Events
page
- Choose what you're in the mood for
- Tap Hangout Now to confirm
On the web:
- Click the Hangout button at the top of the Events
page
- Choose what you're in the mood for
- Click Hangout Now to confirm
You can also enter the Hangout from your Feed , where you may see a prompt inviting you when there are members nearby.
How Does Hangout Work?
Once you're in the Hangout, here's what happens:
- You can browse other members who are looking to hang out, see their photos, what they're in the mood for, and how far away they are
- Your pin appears on the Events map near your location
- You can view the profiles of other members in the Hangout
- The Hangout button turns green while you're in it, letting others know you're available
When you find someone you'd like to meet, tap or click Message on their profile. This opens a chat request where you can introduce yourself. Once they accept, you can start making plans.
If you're already friends with someone or have an existing chat, you can message them directly without a chat request.
How Do I Leave the Hangout?
On mobile:
- Tap the Hangout button on the Events page (it will show as active)
- Tap Leave to confirm
On the web:
- Click the Hangout button on the Events page
- Click Leave to confirm
Can I Create an Event From a Hangout?
Yes. While chatting with another member during a Hangout, you may see a prompt that says "Want to meet more people? Turn your plans into an event!" Tap Get Started to quickly create an event, making it easy for others nearby to join.
How Will I Know When Someone Nearby Joins a Hangout?
You'll receive a notification when friends or other members enter the Hangout nearby. If no one is currently in the Hangout in your area, you'll see a message that says "It's Quiet Right Now."
A Couple Things to Know:
- Only members who are currently in the Hangout can see each other
- Your exact location is never shared. Your pin appears near your actual location, not at it.
- You can only have one open chat request to a member in the Hangout at a time
