The vast majority of Couchsurfing experiences are not just safe, they're genuinely life-changing. This community runs on trust and real human connection, and we take that seriously. Although life comes with risk, we've built tools on both ends to minimize it: backend systems working quietly in the background, and front-facing tools to help you make informed decisions about who you connect with. Here's what we do, and what you can do too.
What Couchsurfing Does
Identity Verification
Get verified. It takes less than a minute and makes a real difference. A Verification Badge on your profile tells other members you are who you say you are, and verified members get more profile views, more stay requests, and more responses. Trust goes both ways. This is how you build it.
References and Private Feedback
After a stay, both members can leave a public reference on each other's profile. References are visible to everyone and build up your reputation over time. Read them before you connect. They're the closest thing to a word-of-mouth recommendation the platform has.
There's also a Private Feedback option after every stay. Anything you share there goes directly to the Couchsurfing team, invisible to the other member and everyone else. It's a safe way to flag something that doesn't quite feel right, even if it's not serious enough for a formal report.
Profile Completeness
A complete profile gives people real context before they meet you. We guide members through filling theirs out, and members need to hit a minimum level of completeness before they can send stay requests or show up in host search results. Fewer anonymous accounts. More informed decisions.
Chat Request System
Members who aren't your friends have to send a chat request before they can message you. You decide who gets through. Simple, effective, yours to control.
System Moderation
We use a combination of automated tools and human review to keep the platform safe. Inappropriate content across chats, communities, and the Feed is flagged, reviewed, and removed. Our Trust and Safety team is always in the loop.
Reporting and Blocking
You can report a member from their profile, from within a chat, or from a post or event. Our Trust and Safety team is notified immediately. You can also block anyone at any time. They won't be able to contact you or view your profile.
For serious safety concerns, go directly to Settings → Trust and Safety.
Safety Tools
Available from the Library menu and from within any active stay. When you need them, they're there:
- Visit Safety Page: links to Couchsurfing's Safety and Support site
- Search Nearby Accommodation: find somewhere else to stay if you need it
- Report: opens the general report flow
- Call Local Authorities (mobile only): connects you to local emergency services anywhere in the world, no local number needed
Emergency Contact
Save an emergency contact in your account settings. It stays private, only accessible to the Couchsurfing team if they ever need to reach someone on your behalf.
Community Standards
Every member agrees to our Conduct Policy and Community Guidelines when they join. Respecting boundaries, not charging for hospitality, keeping conversations on the platform. It's all in there. Members who violate these policies can have their access restricted or their account permanently removed.
What You Can Do
The tools work best alongside your own good judgment. A few things worth doing:
- Read references and review a member's full profile before agreeing to a stay or meetup
- Look for the Verification Badge before connecting
- Keep conversations on the platform before a stay is confirmed. This helps our team step in if something goes wrong
- Let someone you trust know where you'll be and who you're staying with
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it's okay to say no or to leave
- Use the report and block tools if anything makes you uncomfortable
A Couple Things to Know:
- Verification confirms identity. It's not a guarantee of conduct. Always use good judgment when meeting someone new.
- If you're in immediate danger, contact local authorities first. Use Call Local Authorities in Safety Tools (mobile) or call emergency services directly.
