Yes, you can download your data without an active membership. You don't need to pay to get a copy of your profile information, photos, and other data from Couchsurfing. Your export will be sent to your email.
One Thing to Know: Data export without a membership is available on the web only. Use a web browser rather than the mobile app to request your data.
How long does it take to get my data?
Once your request is submitted, you'll receive an email with a download link. Processing typically takes up to 48 hours, but can take up to 30 days depending on demand. You'll get an email as soon as it's ready to download.
How do I download my data without a membership?
On the web:
- Go to couchsurfing.com and log in with your credentials
- Complete any profile updates if prompted
- You'll reach the membership screen that prompts you to select a paid membership plan
- Click the Settings gear icon
in the top right corner of the membership screen
- Click Data Export
- Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm your request
What's included in my data export?
Your data export contains:
- A .json file with your profile information
- All of your photos
JSON files are text-based and designed for data portability, not easy reading at a glance. To view your data, you can:
- Open the file in a text editor such as Notepad
- Use a free online JSON viewer or formatter to make it easier to read
- Import the file into another service or system that supports JSON
If you're not familiar with JSON files, an online JSON viewer is usually the easiest option.
Important notes about data exports
- You can request a data export once every 30 days
- The download link will be sent to the email address on your account. Make sure your email address is up to date before submitting a request
