Being a great Couchsurfer means showing up with reliability, cultural respect, and a spirit of generosity. Whether you're hosting, traveling, or meeting Members at local events, the way you treat people is what makes this community thrive. This guide covers everything you need to know to connect well and contribute meaningfully.
Getting Started
What makes someone a great Couchsurfer?
A great Couchsurfer is reliable, respectful, and genuinely curious about the people they meet. Couchsurfing runs on generosity and trust, so the best Members show up authentically, honor their commitments, and leave every interaction better than they found it. Whether you're hosting or traveling, being a good human matters more than anything else.
Great Couchsurfers also participate in the community beyond just finding a place to stay. They attend Events, join Communities, write honest References, and share their time and experiences freely.
What should I include in my Couchsurfing profile?
Your Couchsurfing profile should include recent photos, a detailed About Me section, your interests, and your travel history. A complete profile helps other Members decide whether to connect with you, so don't leave people guessing.
Here's a checklist for a strong profile:
- Clear, recent photos that show your face
- An About Me that tells your story and what you're looking for
- Your interests and hobbies
- Places you've traveled or lived
- Your hosting availability and any house rules if you're welcoming Travelers
- What you can share or teach others
A profile that feels genuine and personal gets far more responses than one that's polished but impersonal.
Being a Great Guest
How do I be a great Couchsurfing guest?
A great Couchsurfing guest is considerate, communicative, and respectful of their host's home and time. Arrive within the agreed time window and message immediately if you're delayed. Keep the space tidy, clean up after using the kitchen, and ask before using shared items.
Small gestures make a big difference:
- Bring a small gift or souvenir from your home country
- Offer to cook a meal from your culture
- Make your bed daily and leave the space cleaner than you found it
- Be flexible and respect your host's schedule
- Share a skill or story that creates a memorable connection
Remember, your host is sharing their home with you. Treat it with care.
What should I bring when staying with a Couchsurfing host?
Bring a small gift, ingredients to cook a local dish, and a willingness to share something of yourself. Thoughtful gestures show appreciation and help create a genuine connection with your host.
Good things to bring:
- A small souvenir or treat from your home country
- Ingredients to prepare a meal from your culture
- A game, book, or music to share
- Tidy habits and a helpful attitude
- Stories and curiosity about your host's life
You don't need to spend money. The best gifts are often experiences you share together.
Being a Great Host
How do I be a great Couchsurfing host?
A great Couchsurfing host makes Travelers feel genuinely welcome while giving them space to explore on their own terms. You don't have to be a tour guide. Just be a good human, offer to show them your favorite spots, and let them set the pace.
Tips for hosting well:
- Be clear about your house rules and expectations upfront
- Give your guest room to breathe and time alone if they want it
- Share local tips and hidden gems in your city
- Cook a meal together or invite them to join your daily routine
- Be patient with cultural differences and stay curious
All Couchsurfing Members are Hosts by default. You can control whether you appear in Host Search and pause hosting whenever you need a break.
Participating in the Community
How do I be a great Couchsurfer at events and Hangouts?
Show up on time, stay open to differences, and bring the same respect you'd want to receive. Couchsurfing Events and Hangouts are about meeting people and building connections, so come ready to engage.
Being great at community gatherings means:
- Arriving when you say you will
- Introducing yourself and being approachable
- Listening as much as you talk
- Welcoming newcomers who might feel shy
- Following up with people you connected with
The more you participate, the more you get back from the community.
Do I have to host to use Couchsurfing?
You don't have to host to use Couchsurfing, but contributing to the community in some way matters. Couchsurfing runs on generosity, so even if you can't host, you can attend Events, join Communities, write thoughtful References, or share your time and knowledge with other Members.
Many Travelers eventually become Hosts after experiencing the kindness of others. The "pay it forward" spirit is at the heart of how Couchsurfing works.
Trust and Safety
How do Couchsurfing References work?
Couchsurfing References are how trust works in the community. After a Stay, you can leave a Stay Reference that appears on the Member's profile, plus a Private Reference shared only with the Couchsurfing team.
Here's how the timing works:
- The option to leave a Stay Reference opens a few hours after the Stay ends
- You have a 14-day window to leave both Stay and Private References
- You can leave a Personal Reference for any Member at any time, no Stay required
Write honest, thoughtful References. They're the most valuable thing you can give back to the community.
How do I stay safe on Couchsurfing?
Trust your instincts. If something feels off, pay attention to that feeling. Read profiles and References carefully before connecting, use chat to get a feel for someone, and report any odd, inappropriate, or unsafe behavior directly from a Member's profile.
Steps to stay safe:
- Read References thoroughly before accepting or sending a request
- Chat with someone before meeting in person
- Access Safety Tools from your Home menu or within any active Stay
- Find nearby accommodation if you need to leave a situation
- Contact local authorities in an emergency through the Safety Tools
Couchsurfing is built on trust. Help keep it that way by looking out for yourself and others.
Writing Great Requests
How do I write a great Couchsurfing stay request?
A great stay request is personal, specific, and shows you actually read the host's profile. Copy-paste messages are easy to spot and easy to ignore. Take a few minutes to write something genuine.
A strong request includes:
- The host's name
- Something specific from their profile that caught your attention
- A quick sense of who you are and why you're visiting their city
- Your dates, how long you'd like to stay, and what you'll be doing
- Anyone traveling with you, with links to their Couchsurfing profiles
You don't need to write an essay. Just show you're a real person who's genuinely interested in connecting.
