Love a community and want to help it thrive? Moderators play a big role in keeping communities welcoming, on-topic, and active. If that sounds like your thing, there are two ways to get started.
Being Added by a Creator or Existing Moderator
When someone creates a community, they can add moderators from their friends list. An existing moderator can also add you at any time. If you're added, you'll get a notification in your Activity Center.
Applying to Moderate a Community
If a community doesn't currently have a moderator, you can throw your hat in the ring directly from the community page.
On mobile:
- Open the community page
- Tap the About tab
- Tap Start Moderating
- Follow the prompts to submit a short application
On the web:
- Open the community page
- Click the About tab
- Click Apply to Moderate
- Follow the prompts to submit a short application
Applications are reviewed by the Trust and Safety team, who will determine whether you're a good fit.
What Can Moderators Do?
Once you're a moderator, you'll have access to Moderator Tools on the community page. From there you can:
- Edit the community's name, description, cover photo, tags, and rules
- Add or remove other moderators
- View and manage community members
- Ban or unban members
- Request community deletion

One Thing to Know: Communities don't require a moderator to function, but having one helps keep the space healthy and on-topic. If you see a community you care about that doesn't have a moderator yet, consider applying.
