Couchsurfing now requires a government-issued ID to earn a Verification Badge. This article explains why the change happened, how the verification process works, what types of ID are accepted, and how Couchsurfing protects your personal information.
Understanding the Verification Change
Why does Couchsurfing require government ID for verification?
Couchsurfing requires government-issued ID verification to create one clear, consistent standard for trust across the community. Previously, verification could mean payment verification, address verification, or phone verification, which caused confusion about what the Verification Badge actually represented.
By centering verification on a government-issued ID, Couchsurfing ensures that a verified profile means the Member has confirmed their real identity. This helps reduce fraud, impersonation, and misuse while making the Verification Badge more meaningful for Hosts and Travelers.
What changed about Couchsurfing verification?
Couchsurfing verification now centers entirely on confirming your identity with a government-issued ID. Phone number verification is no longer part of the process, and no SMS confirmation is needed.
Here is how verification has shifted:
- Before: Payment verification, address verification, or phone verification could each earn a badge
- Now: Government-issued ID verification is the single standard for earning a Verification Badge
The process is simple: snap a photo of your ID, record a short video selfie, and an automated system checks that the two match. If everything looks good, your Verification Badge appears on your profile.
What happens to my existing Couchsurfing verification status?
If you already completed government-issued ID verification, your Verification Badge remains active and no further action is needed. If you previously completed payment or lifetime verification but have not yet uploaded a government-issued ID, you will be asked to complete ID verification to maintain your verified status.
Can I use Couchsurfing without government ID verification?
Yes, verification is optional. You can use Couchsurfing fully without completing ID verification. That said, a Verification Badge helps Hosts and Travelers feel confident connecting with you, which can make a real difference when you are reaching out to stay somewhere or welcoming guests into your home.
Couchsurfing membership gives you access to hosting and staying with Travelers, Hangouts, Communities, and Events. Verification is a separate step that adds a trust signal to your profile.

Couchsurfing accepts the following valid, government-issued documents for verification:
- Passport
- Driver's license
- National identity card
Your ID must be government-issued and not expired.
Will I be charged to verify my government ID on Couchsurfing?
There is no additional fee to complete government ID verification if you have already paid for verification. Verification is a separate add-on from Couchsurfing membership.
What if my Couchsurfing profile name does not match my ID?
Your ID name should reflect your legal name. If you use a nickname, shortened name, or preferred name on your Couchsurfing profile, that is okay. As long as your ID is valid and belongs to you, your verification can still be approved.
What if my birthday on my Couchsurfing profile does not match my ID?
Your date of birth must match your government ID. If there is a mistake on your profile, update it before starting ID verification to avoid delays.
Privacy and Security
How does Couchsurfing protect my ID data?
Couchsurfing partners with Entrust (formerly known as Onfido), a trusted identity verification provider, to securely handle your documents and biometric data. Your information is encrypted and processed according to strict security standards. Couchsurfing does not store your ID images on its own servers.
