Good news: you don't need to choose between them. Your Couchsurfing membership subscription and verification are two completely separate things that serve different purposes.
Membership Subscription
Your Couchsurfing membership subscription is what unlocks the full Couchsurfing experience. We're talking hosting travelers, sending stay requests, chatting with members, joining communities, attending events, and everything else that makes Couchsurfing what it is.
Verification
Verification is an optional add-on. When you get verified, you confirm your identity using a government-issued ID. Once the process is complete, a verification badge shows up on your profile.
That badge is a real trust signal. It tells other members that you've gone the extra step to prove you are who you say you are, and that goes a long way when someone is deciding whether to host you or open their door to you.
They're Separate. Really.
This trips people up, so it's worth spelling out clearly:
- A membership subscription and verification are two different things. Getting one does not include the other.
- Verification is currently available as an annual plan. An annual verification is not the same as an annual membership subscription.
- If you previously got lifetime verification, that covers your verification badge only. It is not a lifetime membership subscription.
